Before planting, it is essential to carefully plan your landscaping. Planning can be the most important step in implementing a well organized landscape. Take into consideration the following:

• Choose colors. Plants with colored foliage and flowers.

• Will you use flowers for cutting, bouquets & crafts?

• Consider all seasons. Spring and Autumn foliage color.

• What type of maintenance does your time allow?

• Do you want plants that attract butterflies, hummingbirds and other birds.

• Choose focal areas, consider balance, proportion and unity.

• Use of vines & climbers, plants for hedges and screens, and trees.

• Consider climate, lighting requirements, watering needs and soil needs.

• Does anyone in the household have specific allergies?

• Do you want annuals for seasonal color? Perennial borders? Bulb like plants?

A lot of people have trouble viewing a flat piece of paper and visualizing what the finished project will look like. There are a lot of cheap computer programs out there that you could buy that claim they can help you in this area. Experience has shown us that most of these are very generic and leave quite a bit to be desired.
